Revoked registration however the car is insured? make sense.?

I was pulled over as the cop ran my plates, i was astonished to find out the car registration was revoked a year ago. I was at the DMW a year ago inorder to reinstate my license & registation. I was also provided with an insurance policy by geico with no issues. I've been covered with no proble, wouldn't the dmv let the insurance company know if there was an issue? basically I was handed a summons esp for uninsured vehicle since I didn't have the insurance card on me, would i have been able to avoild this problem if I had the insurace card on me?. Since then I thought everything was fine and dandy until today, did the dmv miss smth here?
