Fundraising ideas...help, please!?

I want to study abroad in a year, and hopefully get enough left over to volunteer abroad before college. Fundraising is difficult, especially when it's just me working for myself. All fundraisers I find online are requesting a large price upfront before I even get the profit, and there's rarely more than a 60% profit. If I want to go, I have to raise a lot! probably around $8,000-$10,000. Any suggestions, perhaps more simple? And do you think people will honestly help me out if I want to study abroad? Or would that seem like a waste of their money? Please and thank you!
