Guys, if a close girl friend told you she liked you would you start liking her back?

over the past few months, my close guy friend and i have texted for like 2 weeks straight over winter break, held hands on my bed, danced together at parties, he was being really sweet, and whenever someone asked him if he liked me he would get defensive and say no and then act really weird with me so i am pretty sure he liked me. he knew i liked him and after all this he started being really mean to me. 2 weeks ago, i told him that i still had feelings for him and that i really cared about him. he said he wasnt looking for a relationship right now but he was really nice and even asked for a hug. the week after that, he was being very sweet to me and i thought he was reconsidering me. do guys reconsider girls like that? and the past 2 days he started acting really mean to me again, and he said because i wasnt letting him have "me time". should i back off a little and let him come to me?
