For Neuro Doctors or Medicine Students. Please help me what is happening with my uncle?
I am so very sorry to hear about what happened to your father. I am sorry you and your family had to see that. I cannot answer what happened. I am surprised the CT did not show anything. Ask for a MRI. Sometimes it will show edema or ischemia (is-keem-ea) that a CT could not detect. Sometimes an injury to the brain (stroke) will not show up until 3 days later. Sometimes people will not respond for days following a stroke, a seizure or a cardio-pulmonary collapse. If he continues to seize, it could be a while before you can say he will not wake up. If the doctor's cannot figure out what is going on with him, they should consult a neurologist. Sometimes when there is devastating injury, a person may have myoclonic jerking. It looks like a seizure but it isn't. It is very upsetting to the family. Don't give up hope yet. Keep talking to him. Research has shown that hearing is the last sense to leave the body. Is the EEG negative? Did it show any signs of brain activity? Usually, when the eyes are dilated, they are uniform, not irregular in shape. I think that means there is pressure inside the head. If that isn't corrected, permanent damage can be done....if not already. He really needs a neurologist called in. Insist on this if they try to take him off the ventilator. A brain death exam needs to be done before they should do that. Your family may have to make a very hard decision in the coming weeks to take him off the ventilator anyway if the physician(s) believe he is in a persistent vegetative state. Setting your feelings aside, would your father want to live like that? My hope is he will regain consciousness and will make progress in rehab. He has a long road ahead of him. I will keep him in my prayers. Hang in there sweetie!
