What's the best DIY way to put a texture finish on drywall?

I've done a couple of walls like C Murk. It's really easy and mine look terrific. I did use a very wide putty knife with joint compound (same thing as she's talking about??). Anyway, I'm not an artist by any stretch, but I just layered it on til it looked like I wanted. Went for kind of a stucco look, and I love it! Good luck!
